Rally marching towards the US consulate STORYLINE A US-trained Pakistani scientist convicted of trying to kill US agents and military officers in Afghanistan was sentenced on Thursday to 86 years in prison after she delivered a message of world peace and forgave the judge. However, news of the harsh sentence still touched off protests in Pakistan. Before the sentencing, in Pakistan's commercial capital Karachi about 400 activists of the Islamist group Jamaat-e-Islami and its allied youth group, Pasban, gathered outside the Karachi Press Club carrying pictures of Siddiqui and chanting slogans against the US government and justice system. The group tried to march toward the US Consulate, but the police stopped them before they got too close. Aafia's sister, Fauzia Siddiqui, went to the consulate to submit a written message, which said, "Free Aafia Now." Fauzia Siddiqui later said the sentence was a slap in the face of Pakistan's rulers who had pledged and made promises to bring Aafia back to Pakistan "My sister Aafia is going to come back. This is not her defeat," she said at her home in Karachi. Late on Thursday, a group of Siddiqui's supporters burned a US flag.
