Ransomware is a type of malware that threatens to publish the victim's personal information or permanently block access to data unless a ransom is paid. Simple ransomware usually locks the system in a way which is not difficult for a competent person to reverse, but more advanced malware uses a technique called cryptoviral extortion, which encrypts the user’s files and makes them inaccessible, and then a ransom payment is demanded to decrypt them. In a cryptoviral extortion attack, recovering the files without the decryption key becomes a problem and moreover cryptocurrency used for the ransoms makes tracing and prosecuting the perpetrators difficult. According to statistics the use of ransomware scams starting from around 2012 has grown internationally.
