Hudson River State Hospital is one of the largest abandoned psychiatric hospitals in New York - and this exploration took place during a brutal winter blizzard alongside @TpUrbex. Snow covered the grounds, ice formed across walkways and interior floors, and the weather slowed everything down. Moving through the site required constant awareness. Visibility dropped, light faded quickly, and the cold made even simple movement deliberate. As the storm intensified, the scale of the hospital became harder to grasp, turning a massive, familiar site into something far more isolating and unpredictable. The storm wasn’t planned, but it reshaped the entire exploration. Routes between buildings felt longer and more exposed, filming windows closed quickly as light disappeared, and certain moments had to be captured immediately before conditions shifted again. Batteries drained faster in the cold, hands numbed, and progress across the campus slowed with every step. This video captures Hudson River State Hospital as it exists right now - a brief moment in time before weather, neglect, and decay erase even more of what remains. Let’s explore. History: Hudson River State Hospital opened in 1871 as a state-run psychiatric hospital serving New York. Designed under the Kirkbride Plan, the facility was intended to provide long-term care for patients through structured environments, fresh air, and separation from crowded urban centers. Over time, the hospital expanded into a massive psychiatric complex, housing thousands of patients across dozens of buildings spread along the Hudson River. At its peak, Hudson River State Hospital functioned as a self-contained institution, complete with patient wards, medical facilities, housing, utilities, kitchens, workshops, and supporting infrastructure. As mental health treatment models shifted in the mid-to-late 20th century and patient populations declined, the hospital gradually downsized. Buildings were closed, services were reduced, and sections of the campus were abandoned or repurposed. Today, much of Hudson River State Hospital remains vacant. Exposure to weather, lack of maintenance, and decades of neglect have left large portions of the campus in visible decay. The abandoned hospital stands as a reminder of an earlier era of institutional psychiatric care in the United States - and how quickly massive, once-essential facilities can be left behind.
