Can you really turn loose Inktober sketches into a real sketchbook? Today I try a simple DIY bookbinding process with comic-book backing boards, sparkly vinyl, and PVA glue to see if I can bind my 2023 Inktober pages into one cohesive book. The results might surprise you! I have so much look artwork that I'm going to bind together into books now! I’ll show you how I trimmed, pressed, glued, and wrapped these pages into a finished book, what worked beautifully, and where I totally struggled (hello wrinkly vinyl 😅). By the end, you’ll know the exact steps to make your own sketchbook at home and avoid my mistakes. ⏱ TIMESTAMPS: Can I Create a Sketchbook From My Inktober Sketches? ⏱ 0:01 🎬 Trying to Bind Loose Inktober Pages 0:41 🔍 Anatomy of a Book Cover 1:53 ✨ Pink Sparkly Vinyl Cover Idea 3:10 🛡️ Comic-Book Backing Boards as Covers 5:00 📏 Trimming Pages to 5.5” Squares 8:18 🗜 Using a Book Press for Wrinkled Pages 9:24 🧴 Applying Flexible PVA Glue 11:17 ✂️ Cutting Covers & Tiny Spine 13:00 🧪 Vinyl Adhesion Test for the Cover 17:02 🍯 I'm not Good With Sticky Things! 20:09 🔺 Folding Corners Without Bulk 22:41 📐 Creasing & Reality Check 23:30 📚 Adding Endpapers Front & Back 28:48 💤 Press + Dry Time 29:14 🧠 Fit Check & What I’d Do Differently 33:30 ✅ Final Flip Through #inktober #sketchbook #bookbinding #diycrafts #artist NEXT WATCH... 📖 See My Etchr Sketchbook Tour ➜ • Etchr Sketchbook Tour 🌱 So Much Growth! 🔥 DIY: Make a Sketchbook From an Old Book ➜ • How I Made My Etchr Sketchbook Look Amazing! 🦊ABOUT DONNA FOX 🦊 I’m Donna Fox, a self-taught artist on a journey from corporate CMO to full-time creative. I use PVA glue—it’s flexible, archival, and perfect for sketchbooks because it won’t crack when you open the book. Q: Do I need a book press to make a sketchbook? Nope! I used one because one of my pages was warped. Binder clips or clamps work fine for most projects. Q: How do you make the covers? I cut comic-book backing boards to size and wrapped them in self-adhesive vinyl. You can also use chipboard, recycled covers, or any sturdy cardstock. Q: Why 5.5 inches square for the pages? My sketches were all different sizes, so trimming them down to a consistent 5.5” square made the binding easier and gave me a clean final book. Q: Can this method work for other art or journals? Yes! You can use the same process for loose sketches, zines, or even digital prints that you want to bind into a handmade book.
