During a UBC International Service Learning summer placement, Nidhi Joseph and Ooi Koon Peng travelled to Uganda to work on literacy programs with a community library. During their placement they built a relationship with the Good Samaritan School for the Deaf and have since created a strong partnership with the school, contributing to efforts to promote social change in a country that highly stigmatizes deafness. They speak about their experiences in Uganda and the successes and challenges they have experienced working with a deaf community through community service learning. Nidhi is a 4th year Biopsychology major, and Koon Peng is a 3rd year Honours Economics and Math major. In addition to their studies at UBC both now take sign language classes. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
