DREJKA TRIAL: Opening statements are getting underway this morning in the trial of Michael Drejka, who shot and killed Markeis McGlockton during an argument over a parking spot last year outside a Clearwater convenience store. His defense team will argue he acted in self-defense. Florida State Attorney, Fred Schaub, tried to paint a vivid picture for the jury explaining what happened leading up to the tragic event on July 19, 2018. "It was a typical day for Markeis McGlockton, who was 28 at the time. Markeis McGlockton and Britany Jacobs were high school sweethearts." Before Schaub flipped to the next chapter of Markeis and Britany's life, the defense objected. Schaub did manage to explain the bond Markeis and Britany had. "They've been a couple for 10 years and had three kids together. After sharing the family life and daily routine of Markeis and Britany, Schaub started to peel back the layers of what happened at the Circle A convenience store. Schaub explained to the jury that the defense will give two reasons why Drejka felt threatened and had to shoot Markeis McGlockton. The first reason he mentioned was the 21Foot Rule, which is generally used by police officers. If a law enforcement officer is 21ft away from a person who has a sharp edge object, the police officer can shoot. The second reason, Schaub mentioned was the Force Multiplier Rule, often used by the military. "If you have an army of 100 then you better have an army of 200," Schaub explained. Within the next couple of days, the jury will hear from Roy Bedard, a 'use of force expert. Bedard will explain what use of force means and why the 21 Foot Rule and the Multiplier Rule is not valid for the Michael Drejka case.
