In this video, I discuss a topic that has been on my mind for quite some time regarding the ethical (and legal) distribution (not disclosure) of licensing. WordPress - The “Open Source Project” WordPress is Open Source Software Open Source Definition: “denoting software for which the original source code is made freely available and may be [redistributed]and modified.” WordPress Plugins - Open Source Software Vendors Vendors have no real recourse for policing the distribution of their plugins, such as GPL Websites. Vendors have chosen to operate in an open-source ecosystem - they knew what they were signing up for. Some vendors could care less. Any advertising is good advertising. Some vendor solutions don’t obfuscate the license key, making the licensing free to distribute across the web. Some vendors pretend to care (and will take legal action), but it’s just posturing. It depends on which team member you talk to and what day you talk to them. Some vendors promote influencers who openly steal from them. Vendors are doing deals with WordPress advocates/influencers/whatever, where they package up their solutions to provide/sell to the WordPress ecosystem using a revenue-sharing model. Nothing is wrong with this - Good for you advocates/influencers and vendors. But how is that fair to everyone else? Doesn’t this even further signal that distributing software is fair game? See ‘some advertising is better than no advertising.” My Questions If we pay for a multi-domain license for a solution, can we license that solution (not disclose the license key) as we want? Some vendors say, “Customers must be your clients to XYZ.” Okay, when is a customer a customer, and when are they a client? Is it as soon as they buy from you? Is it once they sign up for your website or care plan? If so, why is that the case? What if a customer buys a website from you and has a large block of support time but not a care plan? What then? I dropped a video on this recently. I reached out to some WordPress media outlets. I’ve tried to start this conversation on social media. NOBODY SEEMS TO WANT TO TOUCH THIS TOPIC—maybe nobody cares, and it’s just the WWW (Wild Wild West). My Approach I always try to do right by the vendors, putting myself in their shoes. Would I care if some rando provided their customers/clients/whatever with licensing if they paid for said licensing? I wouldn’t care, but my feelings don’t give me carte blanche. Feeling aside… I’ve contacted vendors who own solutions I pay for and pay to license multiple domains. Most said, “Absolutely! You’re free to license the sites you build. You bought the licensing.” Some said, “Absolutely! You’re free to license sites you build for clients.” I then press them to see what a client is in their eyes. Pretty much every time, they just restated their original response or sent a link to their terms. They seemingly could give a shit. Some said, “Absolutely NOT! We’ll cancel your subscription, strip you over your licensing, and take your dog from you.” WTF? Screw me for trying to do the right thing. In the end, I feel good about what I've settled on: -Distributing (not disclosing) licensing to clients that buy my pre-built website products. -Providing lifetime access to a space I manage for support, collaboration, etc., so clients have an ongoing relationship with me. -Ensuring my clients are not reaching out to vendors for free support they are not entitled to. -Taking the brunt of and facilitating support for issues that could not be solved in a community space I managed. -Essentially providing FREE advertising for vendors as I promote my preferred tech/solution stack. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Level Up WordPress Websites.
