Five Bagatelles for Wind Quintet (2017) - Kristopher Magnuson Tristan Durie, flute Chie-Ying Lu, oboe Marc Blouin, clarinet Amelia Shiels, horn Sheba Thibadeau, bassoon Audio engineer: Peter Olsen Photography courtesy of One Red Door Photography Sample score: https://app.box.com/s/poxazunw3lvi04a... For score inquiries: [email protected] ___________________________________________________________ The bagatelle is defined by the Harvard Dictionary of Music as a “short, unpretentious piece…often presented in sets with contrasting tempos and moods.” These pieces are just that, with the tonic home notes of the five movements tonally oriented around a simple descending fifth (the first movement largely in B-minor, the second in A-minor, etc.) Quintal harmonies also feature prominently, as do harmonies and melodies constructed from chromatic tone clusters. At the time of the work’s creation, I was in the throes of a minor obsession with Beethoven’s Third Symphony, the “Eroica.” As a result, the fifth bagatelle contains a few motivic quotations of the scherzo third movement.
