Playlist with all episodes: • Travel in Finland, Sweden, Norway, North C... Nuorgam's unique selling point is that it is the northernmost village in Finland and, consequently, in the entire EU. The EU's northernmost point is located here. One can find the EU's northernmost store, northernmost gas station, northernmost school, northernmost firewood vendor, northernmost bus stop, northernmost restaurant, northernmost parking lot, northernmost... There is also a border crossing to Norway, the EU's northernmost border crossing, and a significant portion of the village's income comes from there, as Norwegians prefer to shop across the border where it is cheaper, especially for alcohol. In all the Nordic countries, strong alcoholic beverages are sold exclusively in state-owned stores. In Finland, they are called Alko. In Norway, it's Vinmonopolet, and in Sweden, it's Systembolaget. When it comes to Alko and Vinmonopolet, the derivation of the names is relatively straightforward, but with the Swedish Systembolaget, it's not as obvious. According to the Systembolaget website, the name comes from bringing the tavern business under a systematic structure and putting the spirits sales in a system. Selling alcohol was corporatized and systematized. Nuorgam's Alko is, or at least was previously, one of the highest-selling in all of Finland, with Norwegians accounting for 90% of the customers. When I was there, probably 90% of the cars, if not more, were registered in Norway. However, Alko was quite empty this afternoon, despite it being a Friday. I also did not see any three-liter bottles stacked on the floor, as I had read might be the case. After comparing some prices online in Norway and Finland, I found that the price difference is 20%, at least for vodka. And by the way, Nuorgam's Alko is the northernmost in the EU. In Nuorgam, the warmest month is July, with an average high temperature of 17.3 degrees, and it is the driest place in the whole of Finland. The yearly average monthly rainfall is only 43 mm.
