As the first 3D printed house in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere, Genesis marks a pivotal moment in construction and design innovation. Located in Sydney, Australia, the home introduces a new chapter in residential architecture, combining speed, sustainability and customisation into a single structural achievement. Created by Contour3D with support from CoLab and Versiclad, the project demonstrates the design potential of 3D concrete printing – from its sweeping curves and bespoke wall textures to its reduced build time and environmental efficiencies. Contour3D’s Opus printer was employed to create all external and internal walls using a single, 40 per cent recycled material. In addition to structural components, the printer also produced detailed elements including the kitchen island, planter boxes and fencing, showing how the first 3D printed house can incorporate design specificity typically reserved for high-end builds. By consolidating structure and finish in one process, the construction method eliminates the need for multiple trades and dramatically cuts labour and material waste. Lighting plays a vital role in enhancing the tactile and sculptural quality of the printed concrete. CoLab developed a plan that prioritises ambience and interaction over uniform brightness. Linear lighting installed within expansion joints guides the eye along the walls’ organic forms, while task lighting is subtly positioned to maintain the design’s integrity. This layered lighting approach distinguishes Genesis from conventional homes and reflects a responsive, site-specific lighting solution that elevates the experience of the first 3D printed house. The upper level, by contrast, adopts straight geometries – allowing for efficient use of Versiclad’s prefabricated structural insulated panels. The integration of wall and roof systems into a streamlined design reduced the installation time to just two weeks. These panels also helped the house achieve an energy rating above seven stars, with minimal waste and only one trade required on site. Through the precision and simplicity of this prefabricated system, the build aligns architectural ambition with sustainability and performance. More than a singular innovation, Genesis points to a scalable future. Contour3D envisions a factory model in which homes are pre-printed, pre-insulated and pre-finished before delivery. With each facility capable of producing up to 15,000 dwellings annually, the potential impact on housing supply is significant. In this context, the first 3D printed house is not just a demonstration – it’s a call to rethink how we build, how quickly and for whom. Genesis reflects a collaborative effort between Contour3D, CoLab and Versiclad, each contributing a vital layer to the home’s story. Its curves and shadows, lighting and structure, speed and detail all converge to show that the future of housing can be beautiful, efficient and attainable. As the first 3D printed house in the region, it offers a compelling blueprint for sustainable architecture in a time of urgent need. 00:00 - Introduction to Australia’s First 3D Printed House 01:01 - The Details 01:22 - Comparison with Traditional Building 01:50 - Favourite Aspects of the House 02:07 - Alternative Lighting Solutions 04:14 - Key Performance Goals 05:17 - Technology Used For more from The Local Project: Instagram – / thelocalproject Website – https://thelocalproject.com.au/ LinkedIn – / the-local-project-publication Print Publication – https://thelocalproject.com.au/public...
