This is probably one of my favorite piece of music in all of Dragon Ball. Many of us have made the observation about the parallels between Goku and Superman, especially in the retelling of Goku's send off to earth by his parents. I can't say how intentional it was, but what has stunned me more than anything; more than the similarity in the story between Kakarot and Kal-El, is the score. "Bardock Falls" by Norihito Sumitomo and "Goodbye My Son" by Hans Zimmer are not only in the same key, but share a similar, otherworldly, yet sorrowful and personal feeling- and I am profoundly amazed that two composers, from two different cultures, made very close musical decisions to each other to present these scenes. A cynical take would be to say it was the studio imposing their will on the soundtrack, demanding it to feel reminiscent to Man Of Steel, reflecting the similarity of each story. But I think it's much deeper than that. I think deep down, there are words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs and entire chapters in the musical language represented by notes, chords, progressions, melodies & harmonies that communicate things we don't always know how to articulate in words, but we feel incredibly deeply. I believe there is no coincidence in the musical decisions of two composers half way across the world, choosing the express the reluctant departure of a child from a distant galaxy, at the devastation of his parents who had no other choice. I liked to imagine when Goku finally remembers his parents, we may hear a version of Bardock Falls, as this is the piece that plays the last time he sees them. The first part of this piece (Goku Remembers) I composed as an ode to that.
