BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INTERVIEW: In order to frame my book of writings on operaismo, published by Polity Press of Cambridge,* I would like to talk about the practical experiences of operaismo [workerism] as they happened on the ground, in the 1960s and 1970s. That is, the constant daily work, both practical and theoretical, which was at the basis of the militant organisational processes of the working class in Italy. Those experiences have largely been lost to history, and I would suggest that their recovery is a necessary project of archaeological exploration. I shall also discuss the question of the relevance of workerist practice in today's conditions. In one of my earlier writings I describe the wonder of shutting down a continuous flow production process in the petrochemical plants of Porto Marghera. I would like to describe briefly - in concrete terms - what was the work of factory analysis that was done in and around the Porto Marghera petrochemical plants, and what were the daily practices and methods that the comrades lived at that time. Another aspect of my operaista work, so to speak, came when I was forced to leave Italy to settle in France. In Paris I worked with various comrades around the Benetton clothing company, and also around workers on short-term contracts (interimaires) in the media industry. This too is a somewhat forgotten page of history, so I shall discuss that a little. The heart and fulcrum of the operaista method is the inchiesta [workers’ inquiry]. A process of study and research in order to identify weak points in the cycle of capital, and then organise around those points. If I were to restart a process of militant inchiesta under the conditions of today's capitalism, in particular finance capitalism, where would I start? Then, a small thought about the young people of today. I imagine a young Toni Negri who is just about to start his university studies. What advice would the older Toni Negri give him, as regards ways and means to embark on life as a militant revolutionary? If I look back over the past 50 years, I recall how the old anthem of Potere Operaio was full of certainties and fierce optimism. [State and bosses, beware! The party of the insurrection is born Workers’ power and revolution! Red flags and communism!] For me as a revolutionary, what would be the sources of certainty and fierce optimism in the conditions of today? _____________________ ITALIAN: Per inquadrare questo mio libro sull’operaismo, pubblicato dalla Polity di Cambridge, vorrei considerare le esperienze pratiche dell'operaismo come sono accadute sul campo negli anni '60 e '70. Cioè il costante lavoro quotidiano, pratico e teorico, che fu alla base dei processi di organizzazione militante della classe operaia in Italia. Quelle esperienze sono andate in gran parte perse nella storia, e direbbe che il loro recupero sarebbe un progetto di esplorazione archeologica necessaria. E poi c’interessa anche l'attualità della pratica operaista nelle condizioni di oggi.. In uno dei miei scritti descrivo la meraviglia di chiudere un processo produttivo a flusso continuo a Porto Marghera. Vorrei dire due parole – in termini concreti – qual’ era il lavoro di analisi di fabbrica che si faceva dentro e intorno allo stabilimento petrolchimico di Porto Marghera, e qual era il metodo di pratica quotidiana adottato quotidianamente dai compagni. Un’ altro aspetto del mio lavoro, diciamo, operaista venne quando uscivo fuori dall'Italia a stabilirmi in Francia. A Parigi ho lavorato con vari compagni intorno alla Benetton e agli intermittenti/interimaires nell'industria dei media. Anche questa è una pagina in po’ dimenticata della storia. Anche su quel lavoro vorrei offrire due parole. Cuore e fulcro del metodo operaista è l'inchiesta. Identificare i punti deboli nel ciclo del capitale e poi organizzarsi attorno a quei punti. Se dovessi riavviare un processo di inchiesta militante nelle condizioni del capitalismo odierno, in particolare del capitalismo finanziario, da dove comincerei? Poi, un piccolo pensiero per I giovani di oggi. Mi trovo a immaginare che il giovane Toni Negri stia per iniziare gli studi universitari. Che consiglio gli darebbe il vecchio Toni Negri su modi e mezzi per intraprendere una vita da militante rivoluzionario? Guardando dietro 50 anni, il vecchio Inno di Potere Operaio era pieno di certezze e di feroce ottimismo.
