Local San Diego evergreen sugar bush, Rhus ovata, were planted under eucalyptus trees on a steep slope in poor soil, low water, partial shade, with hot direct sun for a few hours each day as shown in this Throwback to 2014. Ants infested the soil and gophers reigned, devouring anything trying to grow. Fast forward to July 2020 the plants have grown steadily and are healthy with lots of dense growth in a spherical shape. The adjacent Cleveland sage had finished blooming nearby which accounts for the gray rather than purple blooms seen in the video. They are typically purple. Sugar bush is a terrific evergreen bush providing good ground cover with white blooming flowers in the spring and beautiful clear crystal-lookiing fruit in the summer. It makes a nice solid screen or hedge when pruned. It provides food and shelter for the hungry local birds and pollinators.
