Mel Torme aka The Velvet Fog (a name he never cared for) was a jazz singer, actor and song writer. He was noted for his smooth effortless vocals and his unsurpassed scat singing. The most famous song he wrote was "The Christmas Song". He referred to it as one of his least favorite compositions. In the 1970s, he performed as often as 200 times a year in venues all over the world. Legendary singer Ella Fitzgerald known for her trademark scat singing sited Torme as one of her major influences. Mel Torme cited in a 1994 book that the Andrew Sisters were one of his all time favorite singing groups. “Lullaby Of Birdland” was written in 1952 by George Shearing and George David Weisse. The title refers to Charlie "Bird" Parker and the Birdland jazz club named after him. Three great recordings of this song are by Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Mel Torme. Torme’s version appeared on his live album “An Evening With George Shearing And Mel Torme”. He won the Grammy for Best Vocal Jazz Performance , Male for this outstanding recording.Enjoy!
