Again, I wish I could travel in time. To be able to visit the US performances of my violin-hero of 19th century, the Belgian virtuoso Henri Vieuxtemps (1820-1881), and to look over his shoulder while he was composing „Souvenir d’Amérique” – Variations sur ‘Yankee Doodle’“. Vieuxtemps was very inspired by the swing and enthusiasm of the American audience during his concert-tour in 1840ies! I personally see the piece as a lovely connection of American folksong melody with European glamour – charming, witty and full of brilliant spirit. A sparkling souvenir from the New World, with the elegance of the Old. A musical nod across the Atlantic and one more proof that Music knows no boundaries. Together with the wonderful pianist Erik Lawrence, I had super fun performing the “Yankee Doodle” in Fayetteville, Arkansas – in the concert-hall of Butterfield Trail Village. And so we hope to make you smile, too.
