Lecture on "“South Africa: Moving from Militarisation, to De-Militarisation to Re-Militarisation" in the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. Abstract: The apartheid era was characterized by a high threat perception, widespread militarization and minimal civil control. Post-apartheid there is a shift (1994-2008), associated with a low threat perception, demilitarization of society and strong civil control. This changes under the Zuma administration (2009-2018), where one sees a re-militarization of society. This is not due to the military, but rise in private militarization, which legitimizes the use of force, which has come to pose a greater threat to the country. Presented by Dr. Lindy Heinecken, Professor of Sociology and Head of the department of Sociology and Social Anthropology. Her research interests lie at the intersection of society and the armed forces. Chaired by: Fisayo Ajala, PhD Sociology candidate at Stellenbosch University whose current research explores widowhood in the Nigerian military.
