From the 1989 movie: Batman (directed by Tim Burton), this a selection of the cues composed by 4-time Oscar nominee and 2-time Primetime Emmy Award winner: Danny Elfman. About the Composer Today I finally get to talk about one of my all-time favorite composers, a man of unlimited talents and by now one the best known and most prolific composers in Hollywood: Danny Elfman. To think that Danny Elfman himself did not even think he would ever become a musician when has was stil a child (his parents not being musicians), let alone a movie composer, makes it perhaps even more amazing that he became both by what he himself would refer to as a chain accidents and coincidences. Hanging out with his teenage peers who were into music, Danny soon followed by picking an instrument of his own, the violin. He taught himself how to play it and proved early on that he had a good ear for music as he transcribed Duke Ellington music to paper by listening to old records. He was influenced heavily by pre-1938 music and was an avid fan of Bernard Herman and Stravinsky. Through his brother, who played in a French (Parisian) music ensemble, a young Danny was asked to join them and would later also follow his big brother in the Mystic Knights band, all this while traveling to other parts of the world such as Africa and Morocco. In the late seventies Elfman would rename the band to Oingo Boingo and find its niche in the Los Angeles area, praise from music critics and ultimately even score some mainstream succes with hits as "Just Another Day" and "Weird Science". Those talents did not go unnoticed as a young Tim Burton liked Oingo Boingo’s sound so much (as he felt it had a filmic quality) that he asked Danny to score his first movie Peewee Herman's Big Adventure. Despite some early hesitation by Elfman, it would turn out to be the start of one the more famous, longstanding and fruitful collaborations between a director and a composer in Hollywood akin to that of Spielberg & Williams. By now Elfman has composed almost 20 scores for Tim Burton, including some classics like Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Batman, A nightmare before Christmas, Sleepy Hollow, Spider-man, The Corpse Bride, Frankenweenie and Alice in Wonderland. His talents have not been limited to just film composing however, as he is also active in writing concertos and even new solo albums. He also performed at Coachella and was honored with the Max Steiner award in 2020 in Vienna for all his musical achievements (in the "Hollywood in Vienna" series). About the music One could never use too many superlatives to do the Batman score justice. Probably one the most praised and recognized albums by Elfman, it was also the toughest moment in Elfman’s career. After a successful collaboration on the Peewee Herman movie, Burton asked Elfman to write the score for Batman (Elfman’s 10th score), but whilst scoring for small movies had caused no problems or stirs, “The Batman project” was a different story altogether. Producer Jon Peters, initially had imagined Michael Jackson, Prince and George Michael to all write music for the film, but ultimately only Prince would write pop songs for the 1989’s box-office hit. Elfman however was not deemed the right man for the job and had himself refused to co-write the score with Prince (despite having great respect for him), as he did not want to disappear in prince’s shadow. On top of that, Elfman had already written the music in his head and had to walk away. As luck would have it, a month later he would be called back and after a nerve-wracking presentation where Burton insisted Danny to play the now famous Batman march, Elfman got the job after all and would cement his name in Hollywood as one of the leading composers of his generation from that moment on. About the cue The "Clown Attack" is another little highlight on the Batman score with a very coy piano motif opening the cue in what then turns into a very funny interplay of instrument as if they were talking to one another. All that reacting of course building up to yet another dramatic moment in the film as the Joker's "the pen is mightier than the sword"-moment takes place and is met with a flood of strings to emphasize the moment.
