Pascale Beaudin and Adam Cockerham perform three Gondolier songs as arranged by Johann Hasse and published in London in the 1750s. These beautiful melodies and cheeky texts so characterize the Italian penchant for lyricism and the Venetian sophistication even from the folk repertory of the boatman. Imagine a music room in London, the walls decorated with recent works of Canaletto (he is in residence in London), the room with some Roman busts on pedestals, the harpsichord an English instrument played by a young man back from his Grand Tour and accompanying his entitled yet shy Jane Austen like daughter song to be wife in these recently published works. Or imagine yourself in a gondola drifting along the canals of Venice while your boat man in a straw hat with a blue ribbon gently guides the boat past ancient palaces while looking out straight ahead singing these "canzoni" From a performance by the Four Nations Ensemble for the presenting organization ASPECT Foundation for Music and Art. New York City, May 30, 2019.
