As global trade dynamics shift and competition intensifies, Canada Beef is doubling down on its efforts to diversify export markets, particularly in Asia and Latin America. Eric Bienvenue, president and CEO of Canada Beef, outlines how the industry-funded organization is repositioning its strategy to reduce over-reliance on the U.S. market, which currently accounts for 72 per cent of Canadian beef exports. While the U.S. remains a critical customer, Bienvenue says producers and exporters need to think more globally. “We export more than 50 per cent of our production,” he says. “And for us, as a country, we need to make sure that we don’t put all our eggs in the same basket.” Canada Beef maintains a presence in key Asian markets including Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, and the Philippines, while monitoring developments in Indonesia. Bienvenue sees Southeast Asia and Latin America as areas of significant growth, particularly over the next 18 to 24 months. Countries like Chile, Peru, Uruguay, and Guatemala are on the organization’s radar for increased engagement, alongside continued activity in Mexico and new interest in Gulf nations. In Japan, Canada is working to maintain market share despite the impact of currency devaluation and demographic shifts. In South Korea, the playing field is less level—tariff structures favour U.S. exports, and Canada is working to grow its foothold despite that disadvantage. Meanwhile, Southeast Asian markets have shown strong year-over-year growth, not just in volume but in value per kilogram. “Canada Beef’s role is not about lobbying,” Bienvenue added. “We market the product, we create awareness, and we create demand.” However, he emphasized the importance of collaboration with trade organizations like the Canadian Meat Council and Canadian Cattle Association to improve access and maintain competitiveness, especially in countries where Canadian beef faces structural disadvantages. For Canadian cattle producers, the push into new export markets represents both a hedge against geopolitical uncertainty and an opportunity to capture premiums in high-growth regions.
