Albert Lance (aka Lance Ingram) was the finest Australian of the French repertoire. His 'calling card' roles were Werther, Faust, Hoffmann and Don José along with some roles in the Italian repertoire (Cavaradossi, Canio, Turiddu and Duca). Born in South Australia, Lancelot Albert Ingram travelled to Paris in 1954, changed his name to Albert Lance and never returned - making his fame as a French tenor and becoming a French citizen in 1967 - and never returned to Australia! He is captured here as Don Jose from his entrance in Act II, through the duet and Flower Song to the conclusion of the Act. The Carmen is the vibrantly wonderful Jane Rhodes. Zuniga is performed by José Fagianelli with Georgette Spanellys, Jane Berbié and Jean-Christophe Benoît as Frasquita, Mercédès and Le Duncaïre. The performance comes from the Opéra de Paris at the Salle Garnier under conductor Roberto Benzi in this broadcast from November 10th, 1959.
