Dr. Hatem Eleishi presents this concept and explains that follow up of such patients can reveal a more specific diagnosis sometimes as rheumatoid arthritis or other diagnoses as psoriatic arthritis or systemic lupus or ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease or any other autoimmune arthritis disease. The American college of Rheumatology and the European League against Rheumatism have both set criteria that rheumatologists can rely on to predict the likely progression to rheumatoid arthritis in patients with undifferentiated arthritis. So patients with joint pain and joint stiffness and joint swelling who do not fulfill complete criteria for diagnosis of a given rheumatic disease can be stratified into groups with likely progression to rheumatoid arthritis and groups with less likely progression to rheumatoid arthritis. Patients with undifferentiated arthritis are conventionally managed with the same set of disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs that are used to manage other autoimmune inflammatory arthritis diseases and in particular rheumatoid arthritis. These medications include plaquenil, salasopyrin, methotrexate and arava.
