In the European continent there were some large species of mammoths. One of the mammoths with a large population was the Southern Mammoth. Timestamp 0:00-0:09 Intro 0:10-0:22 Movement of Southern Mammoth to the island of Crete 0:23-0:35 Natural selection to make Mini Mammoth 0:36-1:09 Comparison of Mini and Southern mammoths 1:10-1:22 Discovery of the Mini Mammoth fossils 1:23-1:43 End screen Almost 3.5 million years ago some of the Southern Mammoth crossed Mediterranean Sea to reach the island of Crete. These mammoths were exposed to the new environment and limited food resources. Over the years these large mammoths evolved into mini mammoth by the process of natural selection. The mini mammoths were better adapted and more successful on the island of Crete since they consumed less food. The mini mammoths were a new species, Mammuthus criticus. These mammoths were 1.13 meters or 3.7 feet tall at the shoulders on average and weighed around 310 kilograms or 683 pounds on average. The ancestral Southern mammoths had an average shoulder height of 3.97 m (13.0 ft) and a weight of 10.7 tons (21400 pounds). In 1904 scientists found the fossils of the mini mammoth. After some early mistakes of classifying this mammoth as elephant corrections were made to classify it correctly. This was the smallest mammoth that ever lived on Earth.
