On The Origin of the Species That Speaks This video introduces the work of Gregory Bateson who was a fascinating, and highly varied, intellectual pioneer who studied the origins of human communication. I use Bateson’s theories to demonstrate how today’s media technologies may be destroying prehistoric cultural patterns that helped us frame and understand the signals we give to each other. I suggest that this helps to explain today's unprecedented levels of mental illness and general anxiety. An introduction is provided of Bateson’s key ideas including his theories of: schismogenesis; deutero-learning; the double bind; schizophrenia; cybernetics; ecology of mind; epistemology of the sacred. I also explain how Bateson used Bertrand Russell’s Theory of Logical Types to develop a theory of framing behaviour manifested in such activities as play, ritual, paradox, and art.
