📘 SHSAT Math Prep — Master Unit Conversions and Dimensional Analysis! In this video, we solve a classic SHSAT-style arithmetic problem where you need to convert speed using unit fractions. The Problem: A car is traveling at 55 miles per hour, and 1 mile = 5,280 feet. What calculation gives the car’s speed in feet per second? What You’ll Learn: • How to set up starting rates as fractions • How to use unit fractions to convert distances and times • How to diagonally cancel units step-by-step (dimensional analysis) • How to avoid common multiple-choice trap answers Step-by-Step Solution: Write the starting rate: (55 miles / 1 hour) Convert miles to feet (put miles on the bottom to cancel): (55 miles / 1 hour) * (5,280 feet / 1 mile) Convert hours to seconds (put hours on top to cancel): (55 / 1 hour) * (5,280 feet / 1) * (1 hour / 60 minutes) * (1 minute / 60 seconds) Cancel the units (miles, hours, minutes) to leave feet on top and seconds on the bottom: Final Setup: (55 * 5,280) / (60 * 60) feet per second Key Strategy: Never skip writing your units! Treat units just like numbers—if you want to get rid of a unit on the top of a fraction, multiply by a fraction that has that same unit on the bottom. If your units cancel correctly, your math is guaranteed to be correct!
