What are micro-behaviours? Micro-behaviours are the little signals that we send through what we do and say. We’re often not aware of them – but they can have a huge impact on the way we come across and how people react and respond to us. We send these messages through small things that we do – or don’t do. It’s estimated that in the course of a 10-minute conversation between two people, we can send anything between 40 to 150 different ‘micro-messages’ to each other. Why are micro-messages important? Although in themselves small and seemingly insignificant, micro-messages and micro-behaviours can have a huge impact when they are repeated and reinforced over time. Positive micro-messages (also known as micro-affirmations) can help to engage people, make them feel valued, encourage them to contribute ideas and suggestions and build a more communicative, cohesive working environment.
