Today we look at the Battle of the Granicus, Alexander the Great's first pitched battle as king and commander and also the first major encounter in his war against Persia. He had served at Chaeronea in 338 BC under his father Philip II. The Granicus was smaller than Alexander's later battles - Issus, Gaugamela and even Hydaspes. Although Alexander was on campaign for most of his adult life, these four encounters are the only ones considered to be battles. Far more common were raids, surprise attacks, punitive expeditions and especially sieges. This is a look at the context of the campaign, the thionking on both sides and an attempt to reconstruct the battle. It's also a test to see how often I mispronounce the word hypaspist!
