Everyone has heard of the metaverse, but few understand what it truly is. Chances are that kids know much more about it than their parents—and it’s not all PG. More than half (51%) of global metaverse platform users fall into the 13-and-under age group, where they are exposed to child labor, predators, radical group recruiters, and other unlawful activities. Platforms like Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite have experienced explosive growth, with over 860 million users on those platforms alone—most under the age of 18. Kids on these platforms report that there are insufficient moderators, creating opportunities for predators and extremists to exploit and radicalize young people within the metaverse. Law enforcement has struggled to keep pace, while advocates like Rachel Kowert at Take This and Kavya Pearlman at XR Safety Initiative work to urge US and Canadian governments to pass bills regarding child safety in the metaverse. DANGEROUS GAMES is a documentary that places young people in the driver’s seat, highlighting their role as key participants. Alex, Janae, and Katie are amateur investigators who uncover and expose criminal activities online, spreading the word about this project to their vast contacts in the metaverse. They bring fresh, authentic voices with whom youth across North America can relate. The story of Alex, Janae, and Katie is at the heart of this film, with experts, including academics, journalists, and lawyers, providing crucial context to the issues they expose. The metaverse is currently a digital Wild West, and we stand at a pivotal moment in history—one where we can still shape its future governance.
