In het begin van de jaren vijftig besloot NS dat de nog resterende stoomlocomotieven binnen enkele jaren vervangen moesten worden. Daarom werden er 280 diesellocomotieven besteld die, verdeeld over de series 2200 en 2400, er toe bijdroegen dat de laatste stoomlocomotief in januari 1958 buiten dienst gesteld kon worden. Er kwamen er 150 in de serie 2200, en 130 van de serie 2400. Die 2400-en werden gebouwd door Alstom in Frankrijk en waren gebaseerd op een standaard-ontwerp, dat ook aan andere landen werd geleverd. De eerste locomotief kwam in 1954 op de baan. Na hun dienstjaren bij de NS werden 50 locomotieven aan Frankrijk verkocht voor de aanleg van de hogesnelheidslijnen. Sommige zijn bewaard gebleven bij diverse museum organisaties.
