In a 1999 interview with Karan Thapar, legendary Indian Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw addressed a persistent rumour from the aftermath of the 1971 Bangaldesh war. Questioned whether his alleged remark — that, if he had been Pakistani, Pakistan would have won the Bangladesh war — was serious or jocular, Manekshaw rejected the attribution entirely. He recounted a private, light-hearted episode: a young female magazine reporter visited his room, ate his chocolates, and posed pointed questions about his past association with the Frontier Force Regiment in Pakistan. Finally, she asked Manekshaw why he chose not to go to Pakistan when asked by Muhammad Ali Jinnah to do so, and what would have happened had he follow through on this request by the Father of Pakistan. Manekshaw, in his characteristically charismatic manner, described a deliberate, theatrical response: a playful rebuke followed by a quip that he would have won the war anyway and "thrashed" her. This clarified that his words had been misinterpreted and taken out of context, rendering any suggestion of disloyalty on his part misplaced. The exchange illustrated Manekshaw’s blend of candour, dry humour, and unambiguous allegiance to India, and underscored how anecdotes can be exaggerated into myths that obscure the lived realities of military service. #SamManekshaw #India #Pakistan #Bangladesh #BangladeshWar #Jinnah #MuhammadAliJinnah #Vintage #History #Military #IndianArmy #Geopolitics #InternationalRelations #InternationalAffairs #Diplomacy #Statecraft
