Making a one-off fragrance - how should we charge for that? Sometimes people have come to me imagining that one bottle of 4160Tuesdays perfume must surely cost less than a bottle of Chanel, because they are more famous. This is because they don't expect to pay for a creative person's time, just what's in the bottle. My business neighbour at our previous studio only called in to visit me twice: once to ask if I wanted to rent her spare space on a short lease, and once to ask if I could "make her a bottle of Chanel No5 but cheaper". That was a double no. She owns a successful business so she knows about economies of scale, but still she thought she was doing me a favour offering me £30 to recreate a one- off bottle of a masterpiece.
