A victorious playthrough on easy and medium of Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge, Gremlin’s classic 1990 Amiga racer. By the late 1980s, Gremlin Graphics Software Ltd. had firmly established itself as one of Britain’s most versatile studios. Founded in Sheffield in 1984, the company built its reputation on slick, technically impressive titles for the era's 8-bit systems. As the 16-bit era dawned, Gremlin sought to redefine itself with more ambitious, visually striking games, and one of the results was Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge. Developed by Shaun Southern and Andrew Morris of Magnetic Fields, the game was born out of the duo’s passion for racing titles. Southern, who had previously designed Super Cars for Gremlin, envisioned a faster, smoother experience that captured the feel of high-performance driving. Gremlin secured an official license from Lotus Cars, allowing the Lotus Esprit Turbo to take center stage. The partnership added a layer of authenticity and marketing appeal at a time when branded racing games were still a novelty. Released in 1990 for the Commodore Amiga and Atari ST, Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge quickly became one of the most acclaimed racing games on the platforms. Its smooth framerate, split-screen two-player mode, and responsive controls set new standards for 16-bit driving games. The game’s soundtrack, composed by Southern, perfectly complemented its high-speed thrills. Critics praised the game’s technical polish and multiplayer fun. Amiga Format called it “one of the most exciting and playable racing games ever produced,” and it became a consistent chart-topper across Europe. Its success spawned two sequels, Lotus Turbo Challenge 2 the following year, and Lotus III: The Ultimate Challenge in 1992.
