Sometimes, all it takes to find solitude is to choose the right mountain—and the right day. On a golden Monday in late October, I set out alone to explore the Ponca ridge: Visoka Ponca, Srednja Ponca, and Zadnja Ponca. These peaks rise along the remote Slovenian-Italian border, a rugged, narrow spine offering unmatched views across three countries. The trail is steep, exposed, and at times technically demanding. A landslide in 2021 left a section of the ridge officially closed, but the damaged part was manageable with care. I chose the route intentionally—to be alone, to move in silence, and to catch the larch forests glowing under the warm autumn sun. This climb isn’t for everyone. It’s isolated, slippery, and mentally engaging. But once on the airy ridgeline, a quiet magic unfolds: an unbroken view stretching from the Julian Alps into Austria and Italy. I met no one all day. As always, this is a silent solo journey—footsteps, breath, wind.
