Kayaking the Turkey River - Elgin, IA to Access 47 in Elkader, IA - September 2024

Put-in at the grassy area off of River Park Drive in Elgin, IA. This area is on the side of the river opposite Gilbertson Park. Take-out at Access 47 in Elkader, IA. The put-in has a grass parking lot, signage, and a low shoreline for launching. The take-out has a paved ramp down to the river, plenty of parking on the grass, and has a porta-potty. The trip was about 12 ¼ miles and took us about 3 ¾ hours at a leisurely pace. Put-in: https://maps.app.goo.gl/54KkFj8acsDg2... Take-out: https://maps.app.goo.gl/GjnZr8E9JCVzx... The water level for this trip was 5.3’ or 225 CFS at the gauge in Elkader, Iowa. This was a fair nice water level with moderate amounts of scraping. I got hung up a few times in my kayak but never had to get out; I had to take my paddles apart and use them like crutches to pull myself out of the shallows. The water quality was excellent with a nice current across the entire trip. There were a ton of fish in the river of various types which add to the trip; not as many as on the Upper Iowa River the day before but still plenty to watch swim away from us USGA gauge level for the Turkey River at Elkader, IA: https://waterdata.usgs.gov/monitoring...
