Pierre Cochereau would have been 98 years old today! I suspect though that he probably had no ambition to live so long, as he enjoyed frequenting the fast lane in everything he did. In homage here is a rather unusual tripartite post - a stunningly beautiful Elévation Improvisée from the Festival of the Assumption at Notre-Dame in August 1962, improvised on the original 1868 Cavaillé-Coll console. This is one of six movements I transcribed from the original reel-to-reels, back in the height of the pandemic. A wonderful example of post-impressionist chromatic harmony, it says so much in just 2 minutes. Here are three different versions, for comparison: 1. DJB at St Etienne, Caen (Cavaillé-Coll, 1885) - playing the February 2021 reconstruction in June 2022 2. Pierre Cochereau at Notre-Dame de Paris (Cavaillé-Coll, 1868) - the original improvisation 3. DJB at Benaroya Hall, Seattle (C B Fisk, Opus 114 - 2000) - playing the February 2021 reconstruction in April 2022 I hope you’ll enjoying comparing these three versions!
