What is Matter? Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. States of Matter: Matter exists in three primary states: solid, liquid, and gas, determined by the arrangement and movement of its particles. Particles of Matter: Matter is made up of tiny particles that are in constant motion and have spaces between them. Solid: Particles are closely packed, have a fixed shape and volume, and move in a limited manner. Liquid: Particles are loosely packed, take the shape of their container, and can move more freely than solids. Gas: Particles are widely spaced, have no fixed shape or volume, and move randomly and freely. Interconversion of States: The states of matter can be changed by altering temperature and pressure. Sublimation: The direct change of a solid to a gas without becoming a liquid (e.g., dry ice). Deposition: The direct change of a gas to a solid without becoming a liquid (e.g., frost formation). Evaporation: A surface phenomenon where a liquid changes to a gas. Boiling: A bulk phenomenon where a liquid changes to a gas. Kinetic Energy: The energy possessed by particles due to their motion, which is higher in gases and lower in solids. Latent Heat: The amount of heat energy required to change the state of a substance without changing its temperature.
