'Sesame Street' Theme | from 'Songs from Sesame Street 2' | Disneyland Records | 1972 album Produced by the Children's Television Workshop. In the chapter on the music of Sesame Street in in my book 'Spinning the Child' about the albums on Sesame Street Records 1970-1983; https://www.routledge.com/Spinning-th... ... ... I write about the Sesame Street theme tune and lots of other Sesame Street songs; "The opening song on this and a number of subsequent Sesame Street albums is Raposo’s theme tune. Despite his misgivings about Bruce Hart’s lyrics, producer and sometime-lyricist Jon Stone commented that Raposo’s music was ‘melodic and simple enough for a child to recog- nize and even sing along to, but still had a musical sophistication’ (Davis 2008: 159). The words focus on optimism, healthy living (‘the air is sweet’), inclusion (‘come and play’) and community (‘that’s where we meet’). They combine repeated perfect rhymes (day/away/way/OK, sweet/street/meet) with digestible, memorable phrases of mostly three or four syllables. The up-tempo, major key music, child singers17 and high-pitched instrumental backing further contribute to the song’s high levels of childness. The use of ‘blue’ notes from the minor pentatonic scale root this song in vernacular popular music, while the mediant (three semitone) downwards key change into the middle-eight wistfully introduces fantastic imagery (‘magic carpet ride’) and the possibilities that lie behind the doors that gave the programme its name." I've also written about the music of Sesame Street in a paper about Jazz in Children's TV - conference version here: https://www.academia.edu/37712063/Jaz... .. with visuals here: • Liam Maloy: ‘Ain’t misbehavin’: Jazz music...
