Bidh Clann Ulaidh / The Clan of Ulster This is a lullaby which I often used to sing with my sister when we were much younger and performing at local cèilidhs and events. She learned it from the late Ishbel MacAskill at Fèis Rois, and loved to sing it together. Weddings were very big events amongst the upper class, and a great opportunity for clans to display their wealth and strength. The often were a way of forging alliances between clans, and could also include exchange of livestock, money and property in a ‘tocher’ an agreement for the hand of the bride, or a ‘dowry’ for the groom. The song promises that the Ulster clan, along with other renowned clans will be present at the child’s wedding, which in turn promises prosperity and recognition for the baby to have such highly regarded guests at the celebrations! The clans mentioned in this song are: Clann Ulaidh - the Ulster clan, of Northern Ireland, warriors, possibly O’ Neils. Clan Amhlaidh - MacAulay clan, from Argyll, one of the oldest clans, said to be descendants of the king of Picts. Clann Choinnich- MacKenzies, from Ross-Shire / Kintail, their historic seat is Eilean Donan Castle bear Dornie. Their coat of arms depicts a mountain in flame, which is probably why they are referred to as ‘nam feachd soilleir’ or ‘the bright hosts’. Clann Dòmhnaill - the MacDonalds - one of the largest clans with many subdivisions, including the Lord of the Isles. There are so many of them it is no wonder they would be at the wedding!
