Freetown Christiania lies next to Christianshavn in Copenhagen, and it's been a free part of Europe since 1971. It's also been a source of much debate. Between 800 and 1000 people live in Christiania, in old military barracks that were left after the military moved out in 1971. Squatters, hippies and anarchists started to occupy the area, and they soon proclaimed that it was a free town called Christiania. The headline was that civilians had conquered the forbidden city of the military. But the government has tried to reclaim the area many times, and constantly tries to introduce more and more rules and a sense of order to the anarchy. A prime reason for that is that drugs have traditionally been sold openly in Christiania - and that still takes place today.
