The Story of Communication Studies in Sri Lanka In the late 1960s, Sri Lanka was entering a new chapter in education. The world was rapidly changing—newspapers, radio, and television were shaping people’s ideas and influencing societies. At that time, young Sri Lankans who dreamed of becoming journalists or communication specialists had very few opportunities within the island. That began to change in 1968–1969, when the Dehiwala Junior University introduced a Journalism Course. It was a modest beginning, but it opened a new academic path. For the first time, communication and media were being studied not just as skills, but as serious fields of knowledge. Soon after, in 1972, the University of Jayewardenepura launched a Diploma in Journalism. This program attracted students who wanted to understand both the practice and the theory of mass media. It marked a crucial step forward, showing that journalism could be studied with academic rigor, not only learned in newsrooms. The real breakthrough came in 1973, when the University of Kelaniya established the Department of Mass Communication Studies. This was historic—the very first department in the country dedicated to communication. That same year, Sri Lanka’s first degree program in Communication Studies began.
