How to Trade Stocks BEFORE and AFTER Market Hours | Extended Trading in Fidelity

Working a 9-5 job makes it tough to trade stocks sometimes. But Fidelity’s coming in clutch with a very user-friendly extended hour feature. Now you can buy stocks both pre-market and after-market. We take you step-by-step through exactly how to buy stocks either pre-market or after-market. If you don’t know what that means, no worries! Pre-market just means you can buy stocks before the New York Stock Exchange (and all the other stock exchanges in the US) open at 9:30 AM Eastern Time. After-market means you can buy stocks even after the NYSE (and all the other exchanges) close at 4:00 PM Eastern Time. Fidelity’s extended hours feature lets you still trade stocks from 7:00 AM Eastern to 8:00 PM Eastern. So that means you can place all your trades well before you need to head to work or while you’re having a coke and eating dinner! That means that even if you missed out on KO (coke) dipping below $50 a share on 10/19/2020, you can still grab some shares before or after your day job. This is a great stock with a solid dividend that we’ve been watching for awhile, but make sure you’re doing your research and checking their 10-Ks and 10-Qs before you just go on a shopping spree. And if you’re on the West Coast and living in the great states of California, Oregon, or Washington, you can take care of all your trades starting around 4:00 AM in the morning pre-market before anyone wakes up. This is so awesome if you’re a day trader. You could potentially make your entire days salary before everyone else wakes up. But how does pre-/after-market extended trading work? Well, remember that Fidelity’s all about putting buyers and sellers in touch so they move around some stocks. It essentially works the same as your regular market hours, except the volume isn’t as high, so there’s a chance that your orders won’t be filled. Volume is just how many stocks there are circulating in the market at that time. You can still take a look at the volume, bid, and ask prices to get an idea of what you’d have to put your prices at to make a sale or be able to buy from a seller, but things do fill! This is super convenient if you want to make last minute trades after crazy news like Buffet selling off all his airline stocks back in June 2020. Fidelity specifically sets up their extended hours so that all your pre-market orders cancel at 9:28 PM Eastern Time, just so you don’t get slammed by a sudden jump in price.
