It comes down to spending many hours hiking in the woods and following the old stone walls to find these old foundations left behind by the early settlers. With my Garrett ATGOLD metal detector I hiked my way way out in to the woods here in New Hampshire and was the first person to metal detect this virgin untouched site. Working around the footprint of where the house stood I detected in all the iron left from the nails that kept the house together. Many fine relics and artifacts I found like old dandy buttons from the 1700s but my best find of the day was a massive axe head. A huge hewing axe that appears to be very old and hand forged. Solid iron with something like a 9 inch blade edge on it. This type of axe was used for hewing , removing the bark and squaring off timber. Lots of great things found on this day and a prime example that untouched & undocumented sites are out there. This is one more for me to put on the map I am creating of lost to history homesites.
