Source: PMID: 40043236 Bacterial vaginosis (BV) has traditionally been classified as an imbalance of vaginal bacteria rather than a sexually transmitted infection (STI), but growing research suggests it may actually function like one. While BV isn’t caused by a single pathogen like typical STIs, studies show that it is strongly associated with sexual activity and is more common in those with multiple partners or new sexual partners. BV occurs when the normal Lactobacillus-dominant vaginal microbiome is disrupted, allowing an overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria like Gardnerella vaginalis. Research indicates that these bacteria can be transmitted between sexual partners, and BV is more prevalent in those who have sex without condoms or engage in unprotected oral sex.
