Trombonist, composer, and arranger Alton Glenn Miller (1904-MIA 1944) led his big band at the height of the swing era. After a stint with the Dorsey brothers, he started his own band and established a sound that set them apart from his many competitors, by using the clarinet as a solo voice, accompanied by 4 saxophones. In 1942, Miller enlisted in the military to conduct a 50 piece Air Force Band, leaving behind his wife, his band, and his $20,000/week salary. His Air Force Band gave some 800 performances in England before an aircraft he was travelling in crashed over the English Channel. Miller’s life was portrayed in the classic 1953 film ‘The Glenn Miller Story’, staring Jimmy Stewart. Tonight’s arrangement includes Tuxedo Junction; Little brown Jug; Jersey Bounce; and American Patrol. Program Note by Patricia Matos-Puente MD
