With a fierce tone and unwavering swing, tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander has both played in bands led by legends and recorded his own substantial body of work with peers and some of those same jazz titans. Known for his fierce lines, he can also whip up a sublime ballad. While studying Classical Performance at University of Indiana’s famed music program, Alexander became obsessed with both jazz and the tenor saxophone and transferred to William Patterson University in New Jersey to study both. In 1991, Alexander competed in the inaugural Thelonious Monk Thelonious Institute of Jazz International Saxophone Competition, placing second behind Joshua Redman. Post-graduate life found him in Chicago gigging with the likes of the late organ great Charles Earland. He’d later tour and record with other giants including vocalist Freddy Cole, guitarist Pat Martino and pianist Harold Mabern. Alexander has also established himself as a recording artist, making a consistent series of albums that stretch back to his debut, New York Calling, from 1992. Many of his sessions have featured a combination of Mabern, double bassist John Webber and drummer Joe Farnsworth. For 2018 Summer Fest, Alexander will combine his broad knowledge of jazz history with his tireless playing and telepathic relationship with his bandmates for a thrilling, swinging affair
