MED SCHOOL INTERVIEW AT AN IVY LEAGUE | WEILL CORNELL

Hello everyone, in this video I want to share with you guys my experience while interviewing at Cornell school of medicine, one of the 8 Ivy league schools known for its highly selective admissions process to both undergraduate and MD studies. If you are new to the channel, my name is Sai and I am a first year medical student, mcat tutor and premed advisor. This video will be part of my Interview series so make sure to go check out the ones I have already uploaded and stay tuned for new ones coming every week. What are your chances? Weill Cornell School of Medicine receives around 7000 applications, out of which 700 students are interviewed and only 100 are accepted into their class. The average MCAT and GPA for this school is a 519 and a 3.9, respectively, which if I am honest was one of the reasons why I did not expect to receive an interview in the first place. Having score a 516 and carrying a 3.8 GPA, my stats fell on the bottom 10 percent of their matriculating class, so yeah the odds were not really in my favor. The school receives around the same number of students from instate and out of state so yeah that also did not help me. Benefits of attending an Ivy League: So are there any benefits to attending an Ivy Legaue Medical school. The answer is yes. The reality is that in career paths like medicine where networking, resources and connections are so important, the bigger the name of the school you go to, the bigger the doors it will open. It is not surprising to hear that many of these students who attend ivy league schools tend to end up attending or doing research or volunteering at other ivy league programs. With that being said, this should not be the only reason to consider when choosing a medical school. What to expect? Once you receive the interview, you will have to confirm and accept the offer as well as pick your preferred date and time. Because of COVID -19 Cornell has been hosting the interviews through zoom, which is good for financial costs but not so great for those who benefit from one-on-one interactions, something I spoke about in my UM interview video. Based on the available times, you will pick either a morning or afternoon interview session which will be divided by a Dean’s Welcome speech and a Q&A session with medical students in the middle of the day Interview Day: Out of the available times, I picked the morning interview sessions which were hosted before any welcome session. On interview day you will have 2 30 minute interviews, with either a student, faculty member or physician. Unlike UMiami, Cornell’s interviews will both be traditional interviews. As soon as I logged in as was welcomed by the admissions committee I remembered I was waiting for my interviewer and all of the sudden I found myself speaking in Spanish because they could not believe my background. I had the honor to be interviewed by one of the head physicians of one of the departments of the hospital. He was very interested in my research and seemed very impressed with my background. My second interviewer was a student, and again it was very relaxed and laid back experience. Imposter Syndrome: So after having my two interviews pretty much back to back. I logged in for the deans welcome speech and this is when imposter syndrome kicked in. There were a total of about 10 students, and I was the only one who had not attended wasn’t involved with an Ivy League School. You could tell these were top and very competitive students, with multiple publications and amazing narratives, so that’s when I started to feel out of place, questioning why I was picked in the first place. I remember thinking about my MCAT and GPA and how they were on the bottom of the class and obv that didn’t help. After going through that, I would like to say to never doubt yourself and your abilities, if you received an interview is because you impressed those who read your application and you should be proud of yourself.
