Dr. Peter Strouse is a Pediatric Radiologist at C. S. Mott Children’s Hospital and the University of Michigan. This video serves as an overview of radiography of pediatric elbow fractures. Two normal relationships are important: (1) the axis of the radius should align with the capitellum; (2) the anterior humeral cortical line should pass through the middle of the capitellum on a well-positioned lateral view. The six ossification centers of the elbow appear in a reliable sequence; most importantly, the medial epicondyle precedes the trochlea. There are several common patterns of pediatric elbow fractures. This tutorial emphasizes applying knowledge of normal relationships, ossification centers and common fractures to facilitate proper diagnosis of pediatric elbow fractures.
