During the Second World War, some of the most brutal fighting the world has even seen arose on the Eastern Front, as the German Army invaded the Soviet Union under the codename 'Operation Barbarossa.' However it was during this campaign that the Nazis and Germans conducted a number of horrific war crimes. Alfred Rosenberg after the invasion became in charge of the occupied Eastern Territories, and he oversaw them. However he was integral for the Nazis and their rise during the 1930s and 1940s. It was Alfred Rosenberg who wrote many of the Nazi ideologies and theories based on the writings of Hitler and other philosophers. He established the concept of the Nazi Aryan Race, and also outlined the difference between other races and what he believed was the master race. From this, he was staunchly anti-semitic and also anti-communist, and he helped to spread these ideas through his writing and speeches. He was one of the first people to talk about the 'Final Solution,' and he encouraged the Holocaust, as well being partly responsible for the SS shootings and killings within eastern lands. He was also a prolific art thief, with an organisation bearing his name being involved in the theft of 1.5 million rail carts full of art, valuables and jewellery stolen from Jews and others persecuted by the Nazis. After the Second World War, he was sentenced to death after being found guilty of all four charges at the Nuremberg Trials including war crimes and crimes against humanity. He died a virulent Nazi, and offered no final words as he was executed by notorious American executioner John C Woods.
