Video nr 16 in the Innovation for Impact series. In this video, I present a tool I developed to define and link the Business System part of value models (assets, actors, activities = the left side of the BMC). This results in at least two different ways of how a business model configuration can be illustrated as a linked system: 1 – The Value Structure; outlines based on the functions performed exactly how the value is created, using the same logic as the function map for a product. 2 – The Value Network; maps the actors involved and use the functions they perform for linking them. (Potentially, a structure could be illustrated using assets as the base, but I have not seen such an example.) These two mapping options are useful for different purposes, so the innovator can choose the one that fits best for each problem or decision. In the next video (video 17) the focus is on effects created by actors performing activities using assets, and how the right design of business models gives effects that create reinforcing loops; or a Growth Engine.
