Central Park (New York) - How Big Is It Actually?

Situated Right In The Geographic Center Of #Manhattan, Surrounded By Towering Skyscrapers, This Is #CentralPark, New York's Greatest Natural Sanctuary. Spanning Over 843 Acres Or 3.41 Square Kilometres, Central Park Is Not Like Any Other Park In #newyork , The Park Is Larger Than The Country Of #monaco Or Six Times The Size Of #vaticancity . Unlike Most Of Manhattan, Which Follows A Strict Grid Of Streets And Avenues, Central Park Disrupts And Dominates The Famous Manhattan Grid, And Forms A Large, Rectangular Interruption In The Layout. Central Park Was Created In The Mid 19th Century, As A Response To The Growing Need For Green Space In The Rapidly Expanding And Industrializing New York City. The City’s Grid System, Which Was Rolled Out In 1811, Included Plans For A Number Of Small Open Spaces, But Nothing Close To The Scale Of Central Park That Exists Now. The Area That Is Now Central Park, Back Then, Consisted Of Rocky, Swampy And Uneven Terrain, And Was Home To Several Communities, Including The Seneca Village, A Predominantly African American Settlement. These Communities Were Displaced To Make Way For The Park, A Process That Remains A Controversial Chapter In Its History. Construction Began In 1858 And Was Completed By 1876 At A Final Cost Of $14 Million, Almost Three Times The Original Estimate Of 5 Million. The Park Was The First Major Landscaped Public Park In The United States And Aimed To Provide All New Yorkers, Regardless Of Class, A Place For Recreation And Escape From Urban Life. From Peaceful Lakes And Winding Trails To Open Meadows And Historic Landmarks, The Park Is Like A Peaceful Island In The Middle Of The Concrete Jungle—a Place Where People Come To Relax, Play, And Enjoy The Outdoors, Without Ever Leaving New York. . The Southern End Of Central Park Is The Most Visited And Developed, Featuring Attractions Like The #centralparkzoo , The Pond, #WollmanRink , The Umpire Rock And The Scenic Gapstow Bridge. Moving Northward, The Middle Of The Park Opens Into Larger Green Spaces Like Sheep Meadow And The Great Lawn, Which Are Popular For Picnics, Concerts, And Sports. One Of The Park's Most Iconic Features, the Bethesda Terrace And Fountain, Sits At The Heart Of The Park, Overlooking The Lake. Further North Lies The Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir, A Massive Body Of Water Encircled By A Running Track, Offering Panoramic Views Of Manhattan's Skyline. Beyond The Reservoir, The Park Becomes Less Manicured And More Serene. North Of The Reservoir, The Park Features The North Woods, A Quiet, Forested Area With Winding Trails And Waterfalls Along With The Loch Stream. Nearby Is The Harlem Meer, #TheNorthMeadow, The Conservatory Garden And The Great Hill, One Of The Park’s Highest viewing Point With Open Lawns And Scenic Views. This Area Offers A More Natural, Tranquil Experience Than The Busier Southern section Of The Park. The Ramble, The North Woods, And The Hallett Nature Sanctuary, Are The Three Major Forested Areas Within The Central Park as compared to other areas. Throughout The Park, More Than 50 Miles Of Pedestrian Paths And Bike Lanes Wind Through A Mix Of Open Landscapes And Shaded Groves. The Park Also Includes Multiple Baseball Fields, Basketball Courts, Tennis Courts, And Open Spaces For Informal Games. Central Park's Layout Is Also Influenced By Transverse Roads, Which Cut East To West At 65th, 79th, 86th, And 97th Streets, Allowing Traffic To Cross Through The Park Without Disturbing The Scenery. These Roads Are Sunken Below The Park Level And are Hidden By Landscaping, Making Them Largely Invisible To Park-goers. . #usa #newyorkcity #centralpark #geography #facts #manhattan _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Divider by Chris Zabriskie http://chriszabriskie.com Creative Commons — Attribution 4.0 International — CC BY 4.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/_divider Music promoted by Audio Library    • Divider – Chris Zabriskie (No Copyright Mu...   –––––––––––––––––––––– ://chriszabriskie.com
