The duodenum begins at the pyloris of the stomach and runs caudally as the descending duodenal loop. This loop is located ventral to the transverse colon and the beginning of the jejunum. The duodenum then reverses and returns to the left as the ascending duodenal loop. At the point where the ascending loop crosses the descending duodenal loop it becomes the jejunum. The jejunum, which is formed into multiple small looplets, is approximately 2.5 times the length of the duodenum. Duodenal villi first appear at 13.5 days of gestation. By birth the villi have changed from a square to a columnar shape. After birth, absorbed colostrum appears as distinct round lipid droplets in the intestinal epithelium. The droplets can be found for up to 6 days (Koruhmaru et al., 1979). The ileum is short, less than 2 cm in length, and connects the jejunum to the cecum (Malgalhaes, 1968).
